Blogstars on the Beach

This year the Stylecraft blogstars got together to design some projects with summertime fun in mind.

All of the patterns are published Thursday 15th June all of the patterns are available on the Stylecraft blog.

There are also going to be giveaways of YARN.

To enter the giveaways you’ll need to visit the Stylecraft Yarns Facebook page and Instagram page each day of the event – from 15th to 22nd June 2023. Visit both because the giveaways will alternate between the two pages.

However, if you don’t happen to win a yarn pack check your local yarn shop that carries Stylecraft to see if they have packs or you can purchase online [please use the partner links at the bottom of this page to help support me as a designer].

For Blogstars on the Beach I decided it was time to re-write one of my first designs.

This is an item that I use all the time and with the cotton cover on it, it is perfect for in the car, on the beach, or at home.

Fits micro bead bolster  31 x 17cm available on Amazon, and many other places.

Mandala Bolster

I think most of us own one of these, micro bean bag type neck pillows.
While they are so soft, squishy, and useful, they tend to be made with synthetic fabrics and in the hot weather are not particularly comfortable against the skin…. or when us ladies of a certain age have those “hot moments”.

So I decided to make a cover for mine with cotton so it would be cool and comfortable in the warm weather but still cosy and cushy in the cooler weather.

I started the design while I was away on a camping holiday in Dorset.

The ends are based on a traditional Mandala pattern of a circle with a flower in the centre and stitches radiating outwards.
For the main, centre part I used shells and flowers [clusters] to remind me of the beautiful countryside and the beach.

For the original design, I used Stylecraft Classique Cotton Double Knit and a 4mm G hook.
Approx 500 yards. This is now discontinued and replaced with Stylecraft Naturals Organic Cotton.

Best colour match with new Naturals Organic Cotton –
Lavender – Amethyst
Silver – Dove
Greek Blue – Azure
Sky Blue – Faded Denim
Heather – Pink Clay

New colours used are – Stylecraft Naturals Organic Cotton Double knit – 4mm G hook.
Available in 38 gorgeous colours from Wool Warehouse.

1 50g ball of each colour – Amethyst – Poppy – Flamingo – Jade – Blossom

Mandala Bolster colours per round

525 meters / 575 yards.

Finished size: Ends 6 1/2 inches across. Centre: 11 inches wide.

You will need to make two mandalas, one for each end of the bolster.

Centre

The main part of the bolster cover is made in rows, the pattern is repeated 3 times to give the correct size.
You have the choice of using a magic knot to join new colours and have no ends to weave in or work in your own preferred way of changing colour.
