Light and Lacy Summer Poncho

I just love ponchos!

I find them so comfortable to wear, and love the way they can jazz up plain everyday outfits. They are great over a strappy top or plain long sleeved T-shirt.

I brought some Wolltraum yarn some time ago, 4 cakes actually…. I used one for a Virus shawl, and the other 3 have just been sitting there all neglected, while I have been working like a crazy person on lots of other things.

But summer is here…and I am hoping to be spending some time travelling soon, so I wanted to make a couple of really pretty but light poncho’s to just be able to throw on.

A few of you have asked for instructions so here are some very simple instructions to make the Light and Lacy Summer Poncho.

I used 1 200g cake, 760 metres of 4ply with a 4mm hook.

You could easily use any lightweight cotton yarn for this, or even a 4-ply acrylic.

This is a one size pattern, so you can adjust to make it larger or smaller, should you need to.

Rainbow poncho 2US terms

Start with either foundation dc or chain and work row 1 into the back bumps.

Once you finish you will come back and work 2 more rows into this 1st row.

1. Ch 147, starting in 4th back bump from hook, dc in each back bump.
Join to top of ch-3 with a sl-st.
Total 144 dc.
Work away tail end to join bottom of work.

2. Ch 3 [counts as dc], dc in each st.
Join to top of ch-3 with a sl-st.
Total 144 dc.

3. Ch 3 [counts as 1st dc] in same st (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) [point made], (ch 3, skip next 3 sts, 3 dc in next st) 17 times, ch 3, skip next 3 sts, in next st (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) [point made], (ch 3, skip next 3 sts, 3 dc in next st) 17 times, ch 3, skip next 3 sts.
Join to top of ch-3 with a sl-st.

4. Sl-st in next 2 sts and into ch-2 point space, ch 3 [counts as 1st dc] in same space (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc), (ch 3, skip next 3 sts, 3 dc in next ch-3 space) 18 times, ch 3, skip next 3 sts, in next ch-2-point space (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc), (ch 3, skip next 3 sts, 3 dc in next ch-3 space) 18 times, ch 3, skip next 3 sts.
Join to top of ch-3 with a sl-st.

Continue…

Sl-st into ch-2-point space and continue as R4, each row/round will increase.

I did a total of 31 rounds.

Last round, add beads if you like, my friend Kay Crone taught me the easy peasy way to add beads you can find a tutorial here…Going Viral with Beads.

Sl-st into ch-2 space, ch 1 and (sc, ch 2, sc) in same space. [add bead to ch-2 space].

Continue around with (ch 1, sc into ch-3 space, ch 1, sc in middle dc) etc.. adding beads to sc in ch-3 space.

Finally go back to the neck line.

Join with a standing sc 2 sts before join.
Sc3tog over next 3 sts, sc in next 69 sts, sc3tog over next 3 sts, sc in next 68 sts.
Join to standing sc with a sl-st.

Ch 1 and sc3tog over same st and next 2 sts, sc in next 67 sts, sc3tog over next 3 sts, sc in next 67 sts.
Join to 1st sc3tog, fasten off, and secure ends.

  1. Greetings. Just the pattern I’ve been looking for, and makes use of cake I’ve been saving. Yay! So…reading through pattern, I was stumped right off the bat, because I don’t understand the sentence at the end of row 1. “Work away tail end to join bottom of work”. I have a vague idea what that might mean, but I would like to be sure. Help?
Thank you for your reply, and for a beautiful pattern.

it just means use the tail end, with a needle to join that 1st round at the bottom 🙂

      • Thanks….my guess confirmed! Also, thanks for giving us a beautiful pattern.

At the beginning of round 4, it says slip stitch into ch 2 space of point. My ch 2 space is at the opposite end. Help!

    • Helen Helen

you will have 2 ch-2 point spaces, one is front, other is back 🙂

  4. Hello Helen! Where it says Ch 3 [counts as 1st dc] in same st (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc), is the ch3 counted as one of the first two dc in that series or should there be a ch3, 2dc, ch2, 2dc back to back? Also, when it says to skip stitches, does that include the ch2 spaces? I am having a terrible time with this. I have restarted 5x and its not working out.I may even have further questions. I am doing well on the Mandala but this is driving me batty. Thank you so much for your time 🙂

oooh sorry, I have just corrected it…should be always sets of 3 dc, so ch-3 counts as 1st dc, then 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, hopefully it will all makes sense now 🙂

  5. Where can I find the whole pattern starting from the beginning?

    • Helen Helen

Which pattern? if it is the ponchi one then all the instructions are here on this post

  6. Hey:) I have just started this pattern and I’m loving it. Quick question though: before the first 17 repeats, it’s 2dc ch2 2dc, whereas after the 17 repeats it’s 3dc ch2 3dc. Should it be 3dc in the first instance? Just wondering if I’m missing something here:) it’s a lively pattern though and I’ll send a pic once done xx

Yes just 2 ,2 and 2 to form the 1st corners/points, then it’s all groups of 3’s from there on 🙂

  7. You are such a doll for posting this pattern! I’ve got several cakes of Wolltraum just waiting. Helen thanks again for this journey. It’s been amazing. You are very talented and creative. I look forward to your next CAL! Enjoy what’s left of Summer :-)))

      Bless you 🙂

  8. On round 3 do I double crochet in the next 17 stitches or double crochet 17 times in one stitch

    • Helen Helen

If you break it down like this…it may make more sense the part in ( ) is a repeat you do 17 times 🙂
Ch 3 [counts as 1st dc] in same st (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc)
(ch 3, skip next 3 sts, 3 dc in next st) 17 times,
ch 3, skip next 3 sts, in next st (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc),
(ch 3, skip next 3 sts, 3 dc in next st) 17 times, ch 3, skip next 3 sts.
